Description

Photograph of the ruins from the Battle Creek Sanitarium fire of February 18, 1902. The fire started in a bath room and destroyed the building in two hours. All but one of the 400 guests escaped with their lives. The loss was estimated to be about $400,000, most of which was not covered by insurance. The Sanitarium was rebuilt and a new building opened the following year on the same site.
