Postcard showing a photo of the fire at the Haskell Home for Orphans, 1909. The Haskell home was dedicated on January 26, 1894. It was built by Dr. John Harvey Kellogg to take care of orphaned children and teach them trades. Named for benefactress Caroline Haskell who donated $30,000 for its construction, the Haskell Home depended on charitable contributions for its operation. It burned on February 5, 1909 after a fire of suspicious origin. Three children were killed in the fire and are buried in the Haskell Home Cemetery on Hubbard Street.
Written on back: A view of the north end and in the distance you can see 3 streams trying to save south wing, but could not at one time we had a line in on every floor but could not stay, too hot, made a person think it was a second edition of Hell and then some.
